How to Manually Update Your Chromebook

If you are updating for 2025-2026 testing, you will need to update your device to at least version 138.

Keep restarting and then going back to the “check for updates” area until you see the message, “your device is up to date”

CHROMEBOOK WILL NOT START OR CHARGE

If you do not charge your Chromebook past the point where the red battery warning comes up the Chromebook may enter a state that we call really, really dead. In this state, when you plug in your Chromebook it may not turn on or seem to charge. To fix this please go through these steps

The first thing you should do is to hold the Refresh and Power button for 10 seconds. This will force the device to turn off. Now try pushing the power button again to turn it on. If the device still does not turn on, please proceed to the next step.

CHARGE THE DEVICE

First please make sure the outlet you are using is functional and do not have the Chromebook plugged in yet.

With the power cord plugged into the wall, separate the power cord from the adapter at the center box. (If you do not have an adapter box in the center of your power supply skip this step)

Wait for 3 to 5 seconds then plug them back together

Now plug in your device with the lid closed and let it charge for at least 15 minutes. (Note that HP recommends charging some devices for up to 24 hours so if 15 minutes does not work, you may want to let it charge longer or even overnight)

After you have charged the device, open the lid and try to turn the device on

If you have followed these instructions and your device still will not turn on please see Ms. Taylor at the Library/Tech center.
